The Draw of the Mayan Heartland – Guatemala
If you’re an artist — or just someone who wants to see the world more fully — Guatemala offers something rare. It’s not just beautiful. It’s alive with meaning, texture, contradiction, and joy
We set off early Sunday Morning for the largest outdoor Market in the Americas, Chichicastanago.
A short 2 hour drive brings us to the huge outdoor market with thousands of vendors from all over the highlands. Today the start of Santa Semana is the busiest I have ever seen – jammed packed full of people, rows and rows of vendors selling everything from fresh produce to brightly colour woven textiles, from cheap souvenir items to religious icons and artifacts, from furniture to fresh cut flowers; this massive market has it all. The market is so crowded we cut our visit short in favour in of getting to San Pedro La Laguna a little earlier than planned. It was a good thing as just when we arrived in San Pedro the skies opened of a tropical downpour of epic proportions.
