Real experiences – this is what inspires me.  The connection with travel and painting for me is similar to the relationship between bread and butter in western cuisine or  like “Gallo Pinto” rice and beans in the Nicaraguan food experience.   One of the great cultural and gastronomic pleasures of travelling to Nicaragua is eating at the iconic street stalls known as fritangas.  The Nicaraguan fritangas specialize in home style Nica food including gallo pinto, carne asada (grilled meat), plaintain tajada (green), Frito, ( fried ripe plantain) and Moduros ( sweet plantain),  yuca, queso frito, tortilla, and cabbags salad are staples at most fritangas as well as a host of other delicious foods, depending on the fritanga.  I love it all.

I am constantly reinventing the way I describe my obsession with the travelling  brush – this painting capturing the commotion of one of the most popular fritangas in Leon,  illustrates perfectly my experience of all my senses,  as I paint on location.  I am absolutely addicted to the adrenaline rush of painting in these chaotic settings, trying desperately to stay focused on the subject presenting itself to me on this particular travel day.  The painting takes me about an hour and a half – not including eating time … mmmm so delicious!
